With Christmas just around the corner we already have an almost five year old asking if he can get an electric motorcycle for kids from Santa.
Our knee-jerk response was ‘no frikking way!’ Our reasons being he’s too young, they’re too powerful and fast, he’s only just getting used to the idea of not falling flat on his face while walking, let alone on a bike and they’re not safe for kids.
With enough perseverance (read nagging) he’s us doing research and finding out as much as we can about these not necessarily mean-machines.
The first thing you need to do is put the word ‘electric’ into perspective. They are not like the ones made years ago; nowadays they’re solid and safe, and they have loads of features that make them suitable for younger riders, tweens and teens and anyone in between.
They’re a great option if your kid has outgrown his or her pedal bike and is feeling the need for speed. It’s fair to say electric motorcycle for kids have been made according to the highest safety regulations and have features that ensure minimum risk and injury.
Of course they’re only as safe as the rider so it goes without saying that all safety regulations should be adhered to and if riding on the road or on a sidewalk, you need to make sure traffic laws re obeyed.
Electric motorcycles are perfect for zipping around the neighborhood, with the appropriate supervision, or taking along for off road adventures.
There are also bike parks popping up, with areas specifically allocated for motorized bikes nowadays. As far as choosing an electric motorcycle for kids goes, there’s a wide choice available, which cater for all sizes and ages, and even toddlers can pimp up their ride.
Bikes more suited to them have three wheels instead of two and also have much lower maximum speeds.
For the older kids there are motocross style electric motorcycles with high torque engines and they can reach up to about 20 miles per hour.
Because we have a five year old who wants to put the pedal to the metal we’ve been checking out different electric motorcycles and we figured because we’re looking into them anyway we’d give your our top picks, across various makes and models and for different age groups. Instead of pros and cons, we’ve decided to include the features of each of the motorcycles.
